In the Kitchen with Ading's Kitchen (Velly, Chef Rodel and Mary). One of the most beautiful places in Tooting Broadway Market. Below - photos from over the last two years of this Filipino restaurant / grocery shop and the team who work there. Cornish prawns, handmade steamed dumplings, squidy sapin sapin cake and sour tamarind prawn sinigang in those beautiful clay pots brought back from the Philippines by Velly's sister. Spaces like these fill you up with connection not just whats on the plate.
Grocery shop half restaurant, was previously a hair salon, adaptability 💥 you can tell from Velly's glam; first lured in Dec '18 by her "beautifully clad, in lilac soft tones and hot-sauce winter wear condiments to bolster the ice fury". Photo #1: dressed in her favourite shirt she wore when came over here from the Philippines. Velly set up shop 7 years ago after her girls left home. "It was my mission to get more people knowing about filipino food", and she loves people.
The food is cooked by Velly and Chef Rodel; father of 2, who used to be a Second Wing Seaman in the Philippines for 21 years. He wanted to be an engineer but had to stop to support his siblings, then moved when his wife came to work as a nurse in the UK. He started his way up as a porter in the kitchens. Velly came over 30+ years ago as a travel agent, met her husband and never left. She got into cooking when she was nannying and they asked her to cook 'Filipino noodles', using knowledge she learnt from family growing up in the Philippines. "Everything was cooked fresh as we didn't have any freezers" - why their dumplings and blue pea flour jackfruit #sapinsapin will blow your mind a bit.
Velly tries to employ Filipino staff who've lost work due to Covid. Changes from lockdown? Stayed open as takeaway only but was hard with delivery companies taking 40% cut. Without family help, might not have been able to keep going. Cooked for the #NHStaff at St Georges - had lots of friends in the Filipino community - big toll on mental health, especially after recent refurb cost and constant pressure to appeal to the changing crowds🍹
Been surviving since Covid - added a bar, and cirrently doing 50% off mid week if you buy a drink AND just opened a second plaec a few doors down doing Filipino Ramen (@Taramentooting).
