First trip to Taste of China - street food van Run by Yi (Zhongyi) and his wife in Greenwich Market where they've been trading for 10 years. They used to do hand-pulled noodles from a stall there (La Mian and Dim Sum), one of the only places in London you could see it proper, slapping great strands. Only other - Lanzhou Noodle Bar in Leicester Square and when we pulled out our vid of that place to show him he said 'ah! That's my apprentice! I taught him'. They still serve the noodles - all fresh ingredients but made off site before being lowered into that cauldron on-van; stewed been, dan dan, seafood special alongside pork ribs, spicy lamb, roast duck and dim-sum lunchboxes from their long door menu but it's the soups that drew us in, cause it's hard to find em on London's streets!
Roots, Routes and Fruits: Yi was born just outside of Beijing, where he used to be a chef. Came over here to join his wife and raise his daughter (who came to help pack up at end of the day and sat watching us eat noodles from the window of the van). Would you open a restaurant? "No, it's too hard!" Good. We hope you'll be there for at least another 10, please.
